We covered the announcement and release of StorNext 6.0 three years ago. Only four minor releases in four years seems like a leisurely update pace, at first glance. However, StorNext 6.4 will actually be the fourteenth release of StorNext since 6.0 because Quantum likes to use up to four digits for its smaller updates. For example, the last released version was StorNext 6.3.1.1.

Quantum is forecasting some massive improvements for StorNext 6.4. The new version adds support for Amazon Glacier Deep Archive, which was released on AWS last year. The company also makes astonishing claims of improved performance. Quantum says that the new version will improve retrieval speed from large object stores by five times. A lot of this speed-up is coming from the addition of an option to use multiple streams operating in parallel when you store to and retrieve from object storage in a request.  Quantum is also claiming that 6.4 will improves resiliency for large tape archives. They also say that the new version will add support for multiple libraries, allowing customers to rotate file stores to different libraries to increase availability.
