The drone video looked decisive until the flight logs put the camera 70 feet away
The situation
Two landowners disputed whether construction equipment had crossed a property boundary. One party submitted drone video showing equipment near a fence line. The exported video contained no visible coordinates, and the original drone memory card had been reformatted.
What the other side said the evidence showed
That the video showed the equipment across the boundary, with the fence in frame serving as the boundary reference.
Video shows what a camera saw. It does not, by itself, show where the camera was.
An exported MP4 from a drone shows terrain and machinery and nothing about the geometry that would make it measurable. It does not independently establish exact location, drone position, camera orientation, altitude, flight path, coordinate system, or recording-time accuracy. Every one of those is required before footage can support a claim about where a boundary line falls relative to an object.
That data exists — it just isn't in the video file. Drone flight logs, typically retained by the controlling application on the pilot's phone or tablet, record GPS position, altitude, heading, flight path, camera angle, time, home point, and controller information. Those logs survive independently of the memory card, which is what made this examination possible after the card had been reformatted.
Synchronizing the two is the whole technique: match visible events in the footage to timestamped log entries, and the video acquires the geometry it was missing.
What the examination involved
Established what the video alone could support
Terrain and machinery, but no independent basis for location, drone position, camera orientation, altitude, flight path, coordinate system, or recording-time accuracy.
Recovered flight logs from the pilot's tablet
The controlling application's logs contained GPS position, altitude, heading, flight path, camera angle, time, home point, and controller information — surviving the reformatting of the drone's memory card.
Synchronized visible events against log timestamps
Matched identifiable moments in the footage to entries in the flight log, establishing where the aircraft actually was when each frame was captured.
Compared the fence in frame against the surveyed boundary
Positioned the visible fence line geographically using the reconstructed flight path and camera angle.
What the examination found
- The video was recorded approximately 70 feet from where the submitting party claimed
- The fence visible in the footage was an internal agricultural fence, not the surveyed property boundary
- The exported video contained no embedded coordinates and could not have established either fact on its own
- Flight logs on the pilot's tablet survived the reformatting of the drone's memory card

Outcome
The video alone appeared compelling. The telemetry changed its interpretation entirely — not by contradicting what the footage showed, but by establishing what the footage was actually looking at.
