SSD Shows Up as 0 Bytes – Data Recovery

Your SSD appears in Windows but shows 0 bytes capacity or drastically wrong size.

When an SSD shows 0 bytes or incorrect capacity, the controller has lost track of the NAND configuration. The drive's internal mapping that connects logical addresses to physical NAND locations is corrupted or inaccessible. Your data is still in the NAND chips but the drive can't find it.

DO NOT Attempt These Fixes!

  • ×Do not use manufacturer's secure erase or sanitize
  • ×Do not run low-level formatting tools
  • ×Do not update firmware on a failing drive
  • ×Do not use disk initialization in Windows
  • ×Do not run SSD optimization or TRIM tools

Why this matters: These operations can overwrite the translation tables that map your data. Once lost, finding where data is stored in NAND becomes extremely difficult and expensive.

Most Likely Causes

1

Translation Table Corruption

High Likelihood

The SSD's mapping of logical blocks to physical NAND locations is corrupted or unreadable.

2

Controller Failure

High Likelihood

The SSD controller chip has failed and cannot properly access or report NAND capacity.

3

Firmware Corruption

Medium Likelihood

Critical firmware modules are corrupted, causing the drive to misreport its configuration.

4

Power Failure During Write

Medium Likelihood

Sudden power loss corrupted the drive's internal tables during a write operation.

Safe Diagnostic Checks

These checks are non-destructive and safe to perform. Follow them exactly as written.

Document drive state

  1. Note exact capacity shown (0 bytes, wrong number, etc.)
  2. Check if drive shows in BIOS/UEFI
  3. Note drive model and firmware version if visible
  4. Take photos of any error messages

Check in Disk Management

  1. Open Disk Management (diskmgmt.msc)
  2. Look for the drive - note what size it shows
  3. Do NOT initialize, format, or make any changes
  4. Screenshot the drive entry for reference

Only observe - do not make any changes in Disk Management.

When Professional Recovery Is Required

High Priority

You should seek professional data recovery if any of these apply:

  • SSD shows 0 bytes or completely wrong capacity
  • Drive was working and suddenly shows wrong size
  • Firmware update failed or was interrupted
  • Data on the drive is critical
  • Drive contains only copy of important files
Typical cost: $600-$2,000 depending on controller type and NAND configuration

Our Recovery Process

Turnaround Time

5-14 business days depending on complexity

Success Rate

80-90% for 0-byte SSD issues
