CHKDSK Is Not Available for RAW Drives – Data Recovery

Updated Jan 30, 2026
6 min read

When you run CHKDSK, Windows says 'CHKDSK is not available for RAW drives.'

This message means Windows cannot recognize the file system on your drive. The drive appears as 'RAW' instead of NTFS, FAT32, or exFAT. Your data is likely still there - Windows just can't read the file system structure that organizes it.

DO NOT Format The Drive!

  • ×Do not format the drive when Windows prompts you
  • ×Do not try to convert RAW to NTFS using command line
  • ×Do not run third-party RAW to NTFS converters
  • ×Do not initialize or repartition the drive
  • ×Do not run file system repair tools

Why this matters: Formatting creates a new, empty file system that will overwrite your data. RAW status means the file system is unreadable, but your actual files are usually intact.

Most Likely Causes

1

File System Corruption

High Likelihood

The NTFS or FAT file system structures (MFT, boot sector) are corrupted, making the drive unreadable to Windows.

2

Partition Table Damage

High Likelihood

The partition table doesn't correctly describe the file system, so Windows can't identify it.

3

Improper Ejection

Medium Likelihood

Removing the drive while Windows was writing caused corruption to critical file system structures.

4

Bad Sectors in Critical Areas

Medium Likelihood

Bad sectors affecting the boot sector or MFT make the file system unreadable.

Safe Diagnostic Checks

These checks are non-destructive and safe to perform. Follow them exactly as written.

Check Disk Management

  1. Open Disk Management (diskmgmt.msc)
  2. Find your drive in the list
  3. Note if it shows 'RAW' as file system
  4. Check if the capacity shows correctly
  5. Do NOT make any changes

Listen for hardware issues

  1. When drive is connected, listen for unusual sounds
  2. Clicking or beeping indicates hardware failure
  3. If hardware sounds normal, likely file system corruption only

If you hear clicking or beeping, stop - this is a hardware problem, not just file system corruption.
